Agriculture Sector Wide Approach – Support Project (ASWAp-SP)

Project Description

ASWAp is a prioritized and harmonized agricultural investment framework towards 
the achievement of the Malawi Growth  and  Development Strategy (MDGS), the country’s National Development Strategy.  The 
framework provides a platform for donor support harmonization in  the  agricultural  sector.  In particular, it provides a process through  which  growth  and wealth creation, an objective of the MDGS will be achieved. MGDS II has targeted agriculture as the driver of economic growth and recognizes that developing the sector is one of the pre-requisites for economic growth and wealth creation.  ASWAp, therefore, offers a strategy for supporting priority activities in the agricultural sector with a view to increase agricultural productivity and make Malawi a hunger free nation, enable people access nutritious foods and increase the contribution of agro-processing to economic growth.

 

ASWAp framework has three focus areas; namely:

 

Food Security and Risk Management;

Commercial Agriculture, Agro-processing and Market Development; and

Sustainable Agricultural Land and Water Management.

 

These focus areas are strengthened by two key support service areas namely:

Technology Generation and Dissemination; and

Institutional Strengthening and Capacity Building.

Furthermore, the ASWAp mainstreams HIV/AIDS, and Gender through the cross-cutting window.

 

Main Goal/Objective(s)

The main goal of ASWAp is to improve food security and nutrition, increase agricultural incomes and ensure sustainable use of natural resources.

It seeks to:

·        Ensure food self sufficiency and  promote food diversification for  nutrition  at  household level

·        Ensure  sustainable  food availability at national level

·        Promote agricultural exports for improved balance of trade

·        Promote  commercial production  and  agro-processing for  market   development

·        Promote sustainable a g r i c u l t u r a l   l a n d management

·        Promote sustainable agricultural water management and irrigation  development.
