GOVERNMENT RELEASES FARMGATE PRICES
Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security says that regulation of agricultural commodity prices is
key in improving incomes of farmers and achieving food and nutrition security in the country.
Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Hon. Francis Kasaila, MP was speaking during a press conference on Tuesday 7th April 2020, where government was releasing the 2019/2020 Minimum Farmgate Prices aimed at guiding farmers and traders on the recommended prices for different agricultural commodities.
Kasaila said that it is imperative that government regulates the market prices for various agricultural commodities to ensure that farmers get their crops worth as well as affordable prices to consumers.
"The release of minimum farmgate prices at the start of each selling season ensures that farmers are not exploited by the unscrupulous traders. At the same time, this measure ensures affordable prices to consumers."
The 2019/2020 minimum Farmgate Prices puts Maize at MK200/kg, Polished Rice at MK600/Kg, Soya Beans at MK300/Kg and Grade A Cotton at MK389/Kg among other commodities.
Kasaila also revealed during the press conference that Admarc will start buying maize from farmers on Thursday, 9th April 2020 in the Southern Region and Ntcheu District.
A total of Three Billion Malawi Kwacha has been given to Admarc as Startup money to commence the purchase of maize.
The Minister further appealed to every trader entering the market that they are strictly expected to buy the commodities at no less than the recommended minimum farmgate prices.
"I repeat, no one should sell or buy the above selected crop commodities at below the set minimum prices. Failure to adhere to these minimum prices is a criminal offense under the laws of the country and will be dealt with accordingly.
It is expected that ADMARC will open markets on 20th and 27th April, 2020 for maize purchases for the Central Region and Northern Region respectively.
The Minister was accompanied by the Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Hon. Chimwemwe Chipungu, MP, Principal Secretay Gray Nyandule Phiri, Chief Director Dr. Yanira Ntupanyama and Admarc Acting Chief Executive Officer, Felix Jumbe.
