With assistance from the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the World Bank, the Government of Malawi (GoM), is in the process of preparing a detailed projectproposal for the Shire Valley Irrigation Project (SVIP) which is intended to be submitted to prospective donors for consideration for investment funding.

The project is planned to cover 42,500 ha and to benefit 100,000 farm families (or a population of approximately 600,000 people) in Chikwawa and Nsanje. It will be implemented in two phases.

The development objective of the proposed Shire Valley Irrigation Project (SVIP) is to improve agricultural productivity and production in a sustainable manner leading to economic growth and reduction of rural poverty in the Lower Shire Valley, by establishing market-linked smallholder farming ventures and professionally operated irrigation services.
